Resumo: This work was to analyze the thematic importance of playfulness, games, toys and games in teaching and learning in early childhood education process, and their importance as a means necessary for the child's development, both sensorimotor and psychological functions. Pointing concepts and consequences of play activities in early childhood education, instruments used as facilitators, to make learning happen. Since the past centuries, games, toys and games have always been present in various forms of society and in different social classes, throughout the history of mankind. But today, less and less activity has been practiced, this often occurs due to great technological advances, social change, finally, several factors have influenced so that recreational activities are left out or replaced. In this sense it is important that this matter be increasingly reflected and directed into the everyday practices in early childhood education. The study was conducted through surveys and bibliographies based on historical materialism theory critical. It is hoped that through this, there is further clarification on the play, and how it helps in the development of language in children. Therefore, it is necessary to recognize the playful activity, not only as a pastime but also as a means to stimulate the cognitive development of the child.
