Resumo: This monographic work reflects on some advances and challenges of Brazilian education fo- cused on research in the area of educational policies and the limits and possibilities for facing the challenges posed to education nowadays. It starts from a critical reflexive approach pro- posing a systemic view on school and education, proposes a reflection from the history of education and the central problems faced by the public network. Taking a general look at the origins of Brazilian education, and from there, we will try to identify some of its fundamental characteristics, só that we can better understand the central theme of this research. We have been discussing basic education in Brazil since the 1988 Constitution and, more importantly, in recent years, where it has undergone great changes. We will also talk about the teacher’s role in the task of promoting learning and the difficulties encountered during the accomplish- ment of this task. The effectiveness of education is the right of everyone and the duty of the State to guarantee through public policies, since the promotion of fundamental social rights demands the taking of positive actions by the State, só primordial that it passes through the family and society needs to collaborate demonstrating that the higher the level of education of a better population is health, work and other social rights, thus guaranteeing an existential minimum, without the justification that the public purse can not guarantee basic rights to the man based on the principle of reservation as possible. It is important to point out that this research will serve to enrich our knowledge, at a time when the country is going through a crisis that affects everyone, as well as being the basis for provoking reflection and stimulating change, in a society marked by differences.
