Resumo: The purpose of this study was to assess the perception of high school students regarding concepts of ecology. Ecology is a multidisciplinary subject, although it is not worked that way, which may impair the student's understanding regarding its dynamics. They also might not see themselves within the context of the environment, which makes the awareness of changes to more environmentally sustainable attitudes difficult, considering the existing environmental crisis. The survey was conducted with high school students of a private school. A questionnaire was applied to inquire about ecological concepts and teaching methods used in the presentation of the topic by teachers. After the presentation of the questionnaires the results indicated that a significant part of the students consider the study and understanding of ecology as well as the rich biodiversity of the country important, demonstrating better understanding of concepts such as ecosystems, biomes and biosphere. Although the results regarding the comprehension of ecological interactions have been significant, the same does not occur with the classification of harmonic and disharmonic interactions, demonstrating the confusion with these relationships. The understanding of biogeochemical cycles was also deficient, although the students consider important the comprehension of both biogeochemical cycles and ecological interactions for the everyday living. The results indicate that a significant part of the students sees themselves as an integrated species of the environment and the manner which the teacher presents the subject helps in understanding the topic. The classes were presented with the use of whiteboard, verbal presentation, videos and problem solving and the students suggested more practical classes and fieldwork to complement the methods already used. Despite the suggestions, the students demonstrated satisfaction on the methods used by teachers. Therefore, the perception of the concepts of ecology occurs partially and the variety of teaching methods used in order to reach the students to the ecological reality that surrounds them influence the understanding of these concepts and even the vision of the student as a member of the environment.
