The term scientific illiteracy emerged in the mid-1950s and in recent decades has been used as a slogan by researchers and science teachers (CACHAPUZ, 2005), with the intention of drawing attention to the dissemination of scientific knowledge to the general public, not just in the school environment. This theme has great relevance because the country that wishes to consolidate its sovereignty and position of prominence in the global scenario must seek advances in the educational, scientific and technological field (CORBUCCI, 2004). In order to start a discussion about some of the factors that may explain this situation in the country's schools, this research was carried out at the state school, Deputado Derville Allegretti, who through an online questionnaire demonstrated their knowledge and perceptions about science. Through a qualitative analysis, we sought to understand why the school, which in theory should be the appropriate place to acquire a basic scientific education, shows itself so little informed about how science works and develops over time. Nesse trabalho foi discutido o analfabetismo científico dentro da comunidade escolar e teve como motivador a análise do relatório “Brasil no PISA 2015”, publicado em novembro de 2016 e divulgado pelo Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (INEP), segundo qual evidencia a baixa proficiência em ciências pelos jovens brasileiros. A expressão analfabetismo científico surgiu em meados dos anos 50 e nas últimas décadas vem sendo utilizada como slogan por pesquisadores e professores de ciências (CACHAPUZ, 2005), com o intuito de chamar a atenção para a disseminação do conhecimento científico para o público em geral, não apenas no ambiente escolar. Esse tema possui grande relevância pois o país que deseja consolidar sua soberania e posição de destaque no cenário global deve buscar avanços no campo educacional, científico e tecnológico (CORBUCCI, 2004). Para iniciar uma discussão sobre alguns dos fatores que podem explicar essa situação nas escolas do país, foi realizada essa pesquisa na escola estadual Deputado Derville Allegretti, que por meio de questionário online demonstraram seus conhecimentos e percepções acerca da ciência.
