Resumo: Sexual orientation in school, when well conducted leads to a healthy development of sexuality of children and adolescents. Within this context, the teacher is the fundamental piece for the execution and achievement of the desired objectives, therefore, this study had as objectives to identify the knowledge and the practice of teachers on sexual orientation, as well as having a dimension of their level of difficulty in dealing with the thematic sexuality. This is a descriptive-exploratory research carried out in 2 municipal schools and 2 state schools that offer elementary and secondary education in the municipality of José Bonifácio-SP. The sample consisted of 63 teachers. Data collection was performed through the application of a questionnaire. The results pointed out that the teachers acknowledged their lack of technical and personal training for the job. In addition, there is a lack of material resources and time for class preparation, which greatly compromises the development of sexual orientation in school. The teachers also pointed out the need for family and government help for this work. Most of the teachers in this study (55.55% of them) said they sometimes address the topic of sexuality in the classroom. The majority (58.74% of them) also argued that this approach should occur in all classes, regardless of discipline. However, some professors (22.22% of them) still passed this responsibility only to the professors of the disciplines of Sciences and Biology. Teachers pointed out that adolescents use various sources to gather information about sexuality, and one of the largest is the internet, which causes concern about the quality of information collected. Regarding the subjects that should be addressed at school, Dsts, AIDS, adolescent pregnancy, and abortion were indicated by 92.06% of teachers. They also reported that various pedagogical resources such as videos, the internet, and games can be used to work on these and other themes related to sexuality. Most of the teachers interviewed in this study (65.08% of them) considered themselves able to guide their students about sexuality. It is concluded, therefore, that teachers need to be trained both technically and personally to carry out sexual orientation in school, so that students can transform acquired knowledge into changes in thinking and behavior, ensuring a healthy development of the sexuality of these young.
