Resumo: The waste from the swine activities can have negative impacts on the environment, but at the same time, it serves as an economic alternative for farmers. In view of this, the aim of this research is to demonstrate the potential for electricity generation from Paraná 3 Basin municipalities through the biogas produced by swine farming activities. Initially, it was performed a study of municipalities swine heads, based on the Agriculture Census of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE, 2006), followed by manure and biogas production calculation based on the methodology of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2006), finalized by the energy conversion of methane to electricity. As a result, the basin has 1,709,536 heads of pigs, producing 7,463,835 cubic meters of waste and 23,881,636 cubic meters of biogas annually. Ultimately, the production of electricity calculated was 34,102 MW per year. Clearly, the potential of the basin reaches satisfactory levels to transform environmental liability into cost-effective alternative for farmers. As a suggestion, the distributed generation model facilitates the application of this feature.
