Resumo: Waste produced in various human activities is changing into a number of environmental and social problems in a short time, due to factors such as high consumption, lack of orientation and responsibility of the generator. In this context, the present study had as objective to analyze the perception of the population in relation to the separation of urban household waste in the municipality of Marmeleiro, Paraná. It was analyzed the popular knowledge about the selective collection, through the application of questionnaires in 112 residences of the urban zone of the municipality. In addition, it was verified that the waste is understood as recyclable by the population. It was also analyzed if the interviewees know about the existence of the selective collection in the city and to where the waste is sent, also verified if the interviewees do the separation of the residues in recyclable and organic solids and / or tailings. With the follow-up, it was identified that the waste disposed of most of the time are sent to selective collection, and most of the interviewees do not know how to separate the waste correctly, that is, they send waste materials for the selective collection of recyclable materials. In addition, it was observed that the municipal management complies with the legislation, having the existence of an association of waste pickers in the municipality and the current selective collection. But what needs to be intensified is the awareness of people to know how to separate waste correctly.
