Resumo: The Joanes-Ipitanga Environmental Protection Area, created for the main purpose of protecting watersheds members of the Joanes River basin and associated ecosystems, accounting for about 40% of the supply and Salvador metropolitan municipalities, in its Management Council has a major instrument that underlay the strengthening of participatory management process. This study aimed to analyze the performance of the Management Council of the Environmental Protection Area Joanes-Ipitanga and their contributions to the strengthening of municipalities in the environmental management of that conservation area. The results, obtained from the analysis of the participation of this forum in the management process of the conservation area and perception of the performance of the Management Council through the application of questionnaires showed that the recognition of the Management Council acts contributing to the integration of its shares other instruments existing environmental management in the region, besides being essential for strengthening the management of the conservation area. Furthermore, they will support the adoption of strategies that serve as a basis for future research and guidelines to conduct the Management Councils and management of conservation areas, and support participatory processes that will strengthen and integrate local environmental management.
