Resumo: This work had as theme the management of solid waste disposal in the rural area in municipalities of the west region of the state of santa catarina. Although the population living in rural areas accounts for a considerable percentage of the total population and due to the great diversity of activities that generate different residues in these areas, garbage collection in rural areas accounts for only 13.3% of these households, which leads the population don’t have alternatives to the disposal of their waste. The incorrect disposal can generate several environmental problems that don’t only affect the inhabitants of the rural area. The objective of this work was to understand the perceptions of the rural population on environmental issues about domestic garbage in the west region of santa catarina and to identify the different forms of destination given to the domestic solid residues generated by the families. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed with 16 questions applied electronically to first, second, third year high school students, and post-secondary students belonging to the rural educational institution, being oriented to answer the questionnaire with their relatives. After the questionnaires were gathered, it was grouped according to the similarity of the questions and answers. It was observed that all the respondents stated that they know what the selective collection is about, which is considered an extremely important issue, with 87.5% considering that the trash, the environment and the quality of life of the families have a big relation between them. When asked for the families about the realization or not the separation of organic garbage from the recyclable garbage, 68.6% answered that garbage separation is realized, 70.8% to realize deposition of organic garbage in gardens and 65.7% of those interviewed answered to discard the garbage produced in the property through selective collection, which differs from that expected, because 57.1% said they don’t have in their municipality public service of household garbage collection in the rural zone, another 17.1% use fire as a form of discard. Of those who dispose of garbage on the property, 71.4% claim that the disposal site isn’t close to the residence, and doesn’t collect vectors associated with disease transmission. It was found that 80% of the interviewees never received a visit from some public agency with the objective of guiding about the subject and 57.1% of the interviewees said that none of the family members participated in any event or lecture about the subject environmental education, however, only 42.8% of interviewees said they would participate of some event of this nature. The population awareness isn’t fully formed yet, and authorities are required to generate information for these people because environmental education is the foundation for any public policies that may be applied to be successful.
