Resumo: Immigrant people, including Germans and Italians, brought to Brazil numerous social, cultural and linguistic aspects. In this context, considering the changes brought to the Portuguese Language by Italian dialects, this study presents a sociolinguistic analysis of the pronunciation of the Portuguese nasal vowel [ã] spoken by some descendants of Italian immigrants. From this, we seek to ascertain whether this variation is found the same in different family generations, in Sao Lourenco do Oeste – SC, Brazil. To this end, application questionnaires and recording audios were applied in this research, intending to analyze the variation of the talks and it was based on the following authors: Bambini (2002); Frosi e Mioranza (1975); De Marco (2015); Silva (2001); Labov (2008). Moreover, it contextualizes the interference left by the military dictatorship of Vargas in relation to the use of these dialects, relating to prohibition of the use of foreign languages in public. Such measures, which have caused the population of immigrants and descendants of Italians to use their dialects only in the family, probably contributed so that these vernaculars were not used by younger generations.
