Resumo: The quest for increase the physical properties of packaging papers has been a challenge for both papermakers and producers of chemical additives. The starch is one of the main products used in this segment to obtain the increase of strength, as it is a natural polymer of easy obtaining and low cost impacts. However, because it is highly hygroscopic and water soluble, part of the increase in strength obtained at first, get lost as far the paper absorbes the moisture of the exposed enviroment. Therefore the study was conducted with practical applications in a paper and packaging mill located in the state of Paraná. The case studied has shown that Zirconium Carbonate, in addition to being a product in line with the new environmental legislation, is compatible with the starch characteristics used by paper manufacturers, becoming a viable alternative for this purpose. In addition, in function of their physical and chemical characteristics, it presents technical advantages over the common products, with regard to the process operation and the paper resistance. This factors get qualified results for the final product and can directly affect the result in the production of papers for packaging, generating cost reduction for manufacturers.
