Resumo: This research presents theoretic and conceptual issues of developing new strains of genetically modified corn, focusing on issues of productivity improvements, cost savings for producer, biosafety and detection methods for GMOs (Genetically Modified Organisms). Presents statistical data of the amount of corn that is produced worldwide and in the country and the state of Paraná, and how much of total production consists of GM corn. Discusses the features that are provided to new plants that may have high productivity, issues related to their safety in the environment, strains that are currently developed and researched, as well as those already commercially released in the country. The study arranges collection of data and information about corn as GMO, and points out the potential for production, research and development and new products, the risks that can be offered to consumer’s health and the environment, as well as the methods that are used to detection and quantification of GMOs.
