Resumo: Poor quality flooring damages the safety and comfort of those who enjoy it. Often, this poor quality is related to the lack of a deeper study of the soil of the region. For this reason, we tried to analyze the soil of the city of Toledo - PR with the intention of using it in the sub-base layer of a pavement. To do this, we first sought to better understand, through bibliographies, the structure, definition and classification of pavements. In addition, the research presented the tests and their methods of execution, necessary to carry out the proposed work, according to their respective norms. The methodology consisted in classifying the soil according to the Transportation Researt Board (TRB) and determining the expansion index, in accordance with the DNIT 172/2016 standard, performing soil characterization and compaction tests. Afterwards, the maximum result obtained in the expansion (0.302%) was compared with the maximum value recommended for the sub-base (1% for sub-base), concluding that according to this parameter the soil can be used in the sub- base of the floor. However, according to the classification of the TRB, the soil tested is type A-7-5, that is, a clay soil. For this reason, according to the classification of Boreau of Public Roads - BPR only recommends the use of this soil in the layers of the pavement in special occasions, as for example, realizing a granulometric stabilization of the same. Another factor that disapproves of the use of the soil tested in the sub-base layer is the fact that it presents IG equal to 12.8, whereas the suggested value for this layer is zero. In addition, because of the liquidity limit - LL of the soil being equal to 56%, the soil is classified as very compressible. Therefore, it is not advisable to use it in the sub-base layer, since the compressibility can cause settlements and, consequently, cause pathologies in the pavement, such as holes, cracks and bulges. Finally, in view of these factors, it is not recommended to apply the natural soil studied in the sub-base layer of the asphalt pavement, since, in addition to the expansion, no other parameter was favorable to the use of the same.
