Resumo: In the last decades, advanced high-strength steels have become relevant for the automotive industry, mainly in the construction of structural safety elements and for environmental reasons, as they favor the construction of lighter and more economical vehicles. This assignment aims to present steel with a plasticity effect induced by phase transformation, called the TRIP effect, highlighting its advantages and limitations for application in the automobile industry. It was necessary to explain the steel hardening mechanisms in general, in order to later counter the difference in relation to the mechanisms used by TRIP steels. For these steels, there is a need for a rigorous control of the alloy elements, since they directly influence processing conditions and the metastable phase balance. In addition, some methods of producing these steels were investigated as well as the history of scientific research and the economic outlook. As results obtained, the exponential character of the number of publications of articles related to TRIP steels demonstrates its current relevance, which is reflected in the rising high strength steel market. The effort to develop new production/processing methods, although TRIP steel is not the latest high strength steel, shows its industrial importance. It can be seen that the development of TRIP steels is still being carried out, and new opportunities for obtaining new alloys, production processes, and applications are currently growing.
