Resumo: Shear walls are surface elements characterized by one of their dimensions being at least five times larger than the other. Nationally, these elements are designed in accordance with NBR 6118:2014, however it has some simplifications regarding the effects of the second order, which brought from their previous version, NBR 6118:2003, and some authors consider inconsistent. Thereby, in order to study the dimensioning method, this work aims to analyze and compare the design of a shear wall flight, according to Brazilian standards NBR 6118:2003 and NBR 6118:2014 and the American standard ACI 318:2014. For this purpose, a shear wall of a fictitious commercial building was designed, which the efforts of the section with higher loads were obtained through AltoQi Eberick 2019 software. The results showed that there was an evolution of the Brazilian standard, with a considerable reduction of the longitudinal reinforcement on shear wall. However, when compared with ACI 318:2014, it was noted that the last one has a longitudinal reinforcement lower than NBR 6118:2014, with the disadvantage of requiring a larger amount of stirrups. Therefore, it was found that NBR 6118:2014 presented a overdimensioning of the shear wall, which can be corrected in a future update of the normative.
