Resumo: This work verified how environmental education is given in the early years of elementary school in the municipality of São José do Rio Preto - SP and how environmental laws get to school. For this, as a theoretical contribution, the resumption of the emergence of Environmental Education in Brazil and also some notes on continuing education were made. The stages of the research were as follows: initially a documental analysis was carried out based on official documents from São José do Rio Preto; in the sequence a questionnaire was applied, which reached thirty-five teachers from the municipal network of São José do Rio Preto, and the answers to the questionnaire were analyzed from the perspective of qualitative research, of the descriptive exploratory type. Next, the Environmental Projects developed in the two municipal schools that made their School Plans available for analysis in this work were presented; and finally, the data obtained from the questionnaire was analyzed. It was concluded with this work that the Laws are inducing changes in the school environment and that the municipality of São José do Rio Preto needs to invest in the training of teachers in the environmental area and the exchange of experience between schools regarding the Environmental Projects developed.
