Resumo: The aim of this work was to reduce the consumption of electricity in a cold storage from a food industry based in the city of Paranaguá - PR. The application of the PDCA method (Plan, Do, Check and Act) and its tools enable the survey of critical points that can be improved. The elaboration of the simplified flowchart of the process was the first step to determine the operational and systemic failures. Analyzing the temperature history of the two cold chambers installed in the plant, that were obtained through the supervisory of the engine room, and performing the internal measurement of the rooms, which are 1100 m² and 620 m², it was found that the internal temperature of the first chamber is 8.6 ° C and that the second has an internal temperature of 7.3 ° C. Once identified which of the cold chamber is closest to the upper temperature limit of 10 ° C, the PDCA tools are applied to identify the potential factors that lead to an increase in the internal temperature of the refrigerated environment. This identification is performed through the application of thermal load calculations. In this regard, the amount of heat necessary to cool the stored products and the heat losses resulting from transmission through walls, doors, floors and ceilings, as well as other elements such as the lighting system, occupation of people and heat generation were analyzed. from the forklift engine that operates on site. Thus, it is concluded that the thermal load by infiltration of external air in the cold room is equivalent to 43.1% of the total thermal load. The installation of a lock, air curtains and strip curtains means that the effectiveness of the protection devices in the doorways is increased from 76% to 91%, generating a monthly reduction of 38,474.5 kWh. Consequently, the implementation of the improvements raised in this work makes it possible to reduce the refrigerating power of the cold room by 27%, thus reducing the consumption of electricity. This solution, as well as the action plan that aims to improve other parameters intrinsic to the process, were presented to the top management of the company, which needs to invest and enable the application of the improvements proposed in this work so that in six months of operation, it has the planned return . The implementation of the lock, air curtains and strip curtains reduces the cost of maintaining the refrigeration system equipment and, consequently, allows for an increase in their useful life.
