Resumo: Project management (PM) has received proposals for more flexible and adaptable approaches, as is the case of agile project management. Thereby, practices, principles, techniques and tools capable of meeting the market demand for quality deliveries in increasingly shorter deadlines. However, there are still no precise definitions and instruments to measure the success of the implementation of these tools, a factor that directly affects the quality of research in the area. Therefore, this research seeks to present and define the competitive differentials between different traditional and agile project management methodologies. For this, the characteristics of each approach and its gadgets are described using a systemic literature review method. Followed by conducting a survey with professionals in the field, questioning the main characteristics of each of the approaches. The results allow to define its main characteristics, with traditional methodologies considered as prescriptive and oriented to processes, while agile methodologies have a more adaptive, interpretive and customeroriented character.
