Resumo: Wheat bran is a by-product of wheat milling and has low added value. The product was used in an activated carbon preparation with a high surface area, by a chemical activation with KOH (Potassium Hydroxide). The activation temperature of 800 °C and the KOH mass ratio (1:4) were carried out in a laboratory-scale tubular oven. The zero charge point and the apparent and specific density were used to characterize the adsorbent. Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) isotherm model was applied to adjust the experimental data from the adsorption tests. They were adjusted and the maximum adsorptive capacity of the monolayer compound was 628.21 mg.g-1. The other results like pH, time and ideal concentration, and the influence of these parameters on the adsorption of the yellow dye tartrazine were also carried out. These results showed that wheat bran is an effective and sustainable raw material for obtaining activated carbon and a viable alternative for the anionic dyes removal in wastewaters.
