Water degradation is one of most severe impacts that aquatic ecosystems have suffered, and environmental pollution is one of main problems faced by modern society. Among the water quality indicators, dissolved oxygen (DO) is one of the most important for the dynamics of aquatic ecosystems and also for the survival of aquatic species that are directly linked to the presence of dissolved oxygen in the water. The treatment of environmental impacts is more effective when carried out in advance of the negative consequence of the impact, in order to solve the problem of low dissolved oxygen values, it is proposed to apply the aeration technique. The basic purpose of this method is to improve, directly or indirectly, the physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the water for public use and other purposes. The present work applied the meta-analytical research method, which consists of comparing one or more aspects of a given topic of interest in order to facilitate the search for works. The main search site used for the research was the "CAPES Journal Portal", as it is a Brazilian government portal that grants free access to public institutions scientific articles, other sites were also used in the meta-analysis were the bank of “Scopus” data; the publisher “Wiley Online Library” and the magazine “Ecological Restoration”, all with written articles published in the English language with results of scientific works developed around the world. A total of 40 works were selected, and as a result all continents, except Africa, made publications on this subject, with Brazil, China and the United States being the countries that presented the most articles. The techniques were more developed in lentic and semi-lentic ecosystems, 25% of the works were developed in lakes, 22.5% in aquaculture tanks and 20% in reservoirs. Mechanical aeration is still the most used method for the recovery of continental aquatic ecosystems followed by diffuse aeration; however other techniques such as hypolimnetic aeration and spray aeration have been standing out in this field. The strategies for recovering the oxygen deficit in the water are increasingly increasing, and use increasingly modern and less polluting processes. |
