The research has three axes, each fulfilling a specific task in its overall composition. The first axis is the meaning of the work, which is the guiding or theoretical basis. The second axis is the practitioners of Buddhism, since in asking about what the meaning of work is, it is necessary to ask: the meaning of work for whom? The “for whom?” of this dissertation refers to the workers who practice Buddhism. The third axis is the place, the city of Curitiba, Paraná State, which is situated on a material plane where the Buddhism practitioners are. The production of meaning is how the human learning process takes place (WERTSCH, 2007). And work is a fundamental part of people’s lives, since a great part of one’s life is spent at work and one is fulfilled by seeking it (NARDI, 2006). In view of this, the approach used to understand the production of meaning in this dissertation is in line with the concept of ‘subjective meaning’, defined by González Rey (2017), as an essential ontological attribute for qualitative research. The author states that subjective meaning is an inseparable unit of two elements, symbolic processes and emotions, the theoretical construct resulting from this research created a zone of meaning, organizing the elements considered qualitatively most important in this subjective configuration. From the dialogues with the respondents, nuclei of meaning emerged, work as a mission, Buddhism in daily life, the exemplary posture in the workplace, and discipline are some of them. All these cores of meaning together point to an understanding of the subjective configuration of meaning of work for Buddhist practitioners which is work activity as an extension of religious practice. Far from being an exhaustive proposal, we sought to dialogue with the implicit and explicit meanings of the participants’ speeches in order to understand this social phenomenon, and to broaden the understanding about it through the presentation of the theoretical construct. Esta dissertação explora os sentidos subjetivos do trabalho para os praticantes do budismo na cidade de Curitiba, Estado do Paraná, partindo dos pressupostos inerentes a uma pesquisa qualitativa, ou seja, de uma abordagem que busca compreender o mundo social por meio da interpretação dos seus participantes (BRYMAN e BELL, 2011). A pesquisa tem três eixos, cada um deles cumprindo uma tarefa específica em sua composição geral. O primeiro eixo é o sentido do trabalho, que é o norteador ou base teórica. O segundo eixo são os praticantes do budismo, uma vez que ao questionar sobre qual o sentido do trabalho, é necessário perguntar: o sentido do trabalho para quem? O “para quem?” desta dissertação refere-se aos trabalhadores que praticam o budismo. O terceiro eixo é o local, a cidade de Curitiba, Estado do Paraná, que situa em um plano material onde se encontram os praticantes do budismo. A produção de sentido é como o processo de aprendizado humano se dá (WERTSCH, 2007). E o trabalho é parte fundamental da vida das pessoas, posto que, vive-se grande parte da vida no trabalho e realiza-se buscando-o (NARDI, 2006). Diante disso, a abordagem utilizada para compreender a produção de sentido nesta dissertação, está em consonância com o conceito de ‘sentido subjetivo’, definido por González Rey (2017), como atributo ontológico essencial para a pesquisa qualitativa. O autor declara que o sentido subjetivo é uma unidade inseparável de dois elementos, os processos simbólicos e as emoções, o construto teórico resultante desta pesquisa criou uma configuração subjetiva, organizando os elementos considerados qualitativamente mais importantes nessa configuração subjetiva. A partir dos diálogos com os respondentes surgiram núcleos de sentido, o trabalho como missão, o budismo na vida diária, a postura exemplar no local de trabalho e a disciplina são alguns deles. Todos esses núcleos de sentido em conjunto apontam para uma compreensão da configuração subjetiva de sentido do trabalho para os praticantes do budismo que é o atividade trabalho como uma extensão da prática religiosa.
