Resumo: Circuit breakers are components from electrical power systems that allow the control of transmitted energy. They are electromechanical devices that exhibit natural wear and tear due to their operation, requiring periodic maintenance interventions throughout their useful life. This text brings a comparative study of costs between the alternative of general equipment overhaul in the workshop and the option of replacing it with new units. Initially, life cycle cost concepts applied to production units are introduced as a basis for analysis. The element in focus is the family of M-G FA4 circuit-breakers of an electricity transmission utility operating in the southern region of Brazil. Actual data on labor costs and the supply of materials and installations were used, aiming to assist in making maintenance management decisions and the use of this knowledge in other types of equipment. The study concludes that the most economically advantageous alternative is the replacement of the units.
