The availability of data to be entered into machine tools is very important information. This is because, it reduces the time of preliminary tests for a product and allows a greater use of the material in the industry. The companies that work with mold, matrix, tools holder, carriage shaft and pressure casting, for example, need that the used materials have some characteristics such as: high strength, hardness and good machinability. In front of this, the objective of this study is to know the behavior of Toolox® 44, a tool steel that has the characteristics mentioned above, in the turning process, comparing it to the SAE 1045 steel. For this comparison, the focus of the study was to analyze the micrograph, the hardness, the corrosion, the machining temperature, the chip, the tool wear and the roughness. Two cutting tools were used, a hard metal with physical vapor deposition coating and a ceramic with aluminum oxide. The cutting speeds ranged from 179.446 m/min to 245.3 m/min, the deep cutting was kept always in 0.25 mm and two values of feed rate was used (0.079 mm and 0.14 mm). The results of this study showed that the annual corrosion rate on Toolox® 44 is more than three times smaller than that of 1045 steel approximately 964 and 3417 mm/year, respectively. The hardness on Toolox® 44 is almost five times bigger than that of 1045 steel, 352 and 174 HB, respectively. During the turning process, the values of temperatures measured in the chip were bigger for the hard metal tool, with an average of approximately 178 ºC. The shape and color of the chip is different during the cutoff operation for the two materials, because for Toolox® steel the operation must not be interrupted. The ceramic tool got less wear. Yet The average roughness for the two tools was within the expected range for the turning process. In view of the above, the suggestion regarding the choice of one of the tools for machining these materials is to choose the cheapest one, in order to minimize the costs of the process. 2022-08-30T13:48:45Z 2022-08-30T13:48:45Z 2022-03-07 bachelorThesis AMARANTE, Bernardo Pereira do.
