Resumo: The study of phytocosmetics focuses on the applicability and action of the active ingredients extracted from plants for the hygiene, beauty and maintenance of skin and hair. In this way, they contribute to the health of those who use these cosmetics and also to the preservation of the environment, ensuring sustainability. However, many Brazilian consumers still make use only of products derived from mineral and animal origin, often because they are unaware of other options available in the market. Thus, cosmetics made from plant extracts are not valued as they should be, especially those derived from species of Brazilian flora. Based on this premise, the aim of this study was to analyze the level of knowledge of consumers regarding what phytocosmetics are and which plant extracts from native species are most used for their production, through a descriptive study with a qualitative-quantitative approach. Data collection was carried out using a structured questionnaire containing 15 questions, which were made available on social media. Of the 214 participants, the vast majority were women, about 86.4%. With regard to phytocosmetics, 51.9% of the respondents said they did not know what the term was about. The results also point out that 61.7% of the correspondents did not know how to inform any native species that provides the plant extracts used in these cosmetics. And when they did inform, they cited exotic plants, such as Aloe vera, showing the lack of information regarding the Brazilian flora. Through the questionnaire it was found that there is environmental awareness and concern for the environment on the part of consumers, even with the lack of knowledge about the native plant extracts used in the production of phytocosmetics.
