Resumo: The in-level intersections are places with the highest indices of accidents in highways, both in urban and rural environments. In a local context, the intersection between the PR-423 highway and the João Stukas Street (municipality of Campo Largo/PR, Brazil) deserves a special attention due to the great number of collisions and fatalities within the last years – local residents have also named it as “Death Intersection”. In an attempt to reduce the accident statistics and increase traffic capacity, the present study mainly aimed at evaluating the feasibility of the implementation of a one-lane roundabout in the current intersection, and with all entrance roads containing one lane as well. Based on preliminary traffic data, a literature review and estimations of increase in traffic according to the database from the Paraná State Department of Roads (DETRAN/PR), the traffic flows in each entrance road were calculated by considering the design year of 2037. The DNIT and DENATRAN Brazilian methods were considered in the calculations of capacity and Level of Service (LOS) for each entrance of the roundabout. A preliminary project of this roundabout was also prepared in the current investigation. The entrances from the main road (PR-423 highway) showed LOS equal to C, whereas the ones from the secondary road (João Stukas Street) showed LOS equal to A. The average waiting time in the roundabout was approximately equal to 22 s according to the DNIT method, and the results collected according to the DENATRAN method gave support to the hypothesis that the use of a roundabout in the studied intersection is technically feasible. In this manner, it is possible to conclude that the one-lane roundabout is an interesting option. Future studies may include the use of traffic simulators for evaluating its operational performance, as well as analyses of its economic feasibility.
