Resumo: The optical fiber is one of the inventions responsible for the great development and improvement of telecommunications networks today. Its use provides numerous advantages compared to the traditional copper wire, with the main one being the high speed in data transmission, which is indispensable nowadays, considering the increasing demand for data, voice and video services. Therefore, the adoption of this type of communication by a large number of Internet Service Providers worldwide has been growing a lot in the last several years. This work presents an analysis of the main points about the theory behind fiber optics, showing its characteristics, the technologies and applications of this kind of material which are most used in the providers’ networks today. The main topologies and architectures of an optical network are also described, as well as its components. At the end, a discussion is made about the subject, exposing statistical data on the use of fiber optics by providers and presenting notions of how these companies design and expand their optical networks.
