However, its diagnosis is still performed using qualitative scales. Recent studies have shown evidence that thermography could be useful in this context, as it is a technology that has been continuously improved. Although the pathophysiology of radiodermatitis is known, there are still few studies showing the thermal response to radiotherapy and mapping of radiation dermatitis (with its respective grading). Thus, the present study aimed to analyze the association between the temperature of the irradiated skin, the accumulated dose of radiation and the diagnosis of radiation dermatitis, through thermography. Descriptive research was carried out with 76 participants with cancer (skin, head, or neck), with thermographic recording immediately before and after irradiation (both on the affected and contralateral sides). For the diagnosis of radiodermatitis, the RTOG scale (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group) was used. Complementary information recorded in history taking were: sex, age, comorbidities, type and equipment used in the treatment, dose (daily and total), irradiated area. As main results in our sample, 70% of the participants had some degree of radiation dermatitis and significant differences in skin temperature were observed when compared to patients without radiodermatitis (32.88°C/91°F) and with radiodermatitis (thermal difference in average temperature greater than 1.0°C/34°F for both Grade I and Grade II radiation dermatitis). Regarding the diagnosis, the ideal time to perform the thermographic evaluation would be after receiving the new daily dose, where we also found a moderate correlation (0.474) between the temperature of the affected side after irradiation and the pre-irradiation cumulative dose. Our results demonstrate that radiodermatitis promotes a change in skin temperature that thermographic analysis is able to quantify. Finally, it can be concluded that there is an association between skin temperature, the accumulated radiation dose, and the appearance of radiodermatitis. Based on the results of this research, we suggest studies with larger samples, and, thus, the exploration of new methodologies with quantitative criteria for the diagnosis of radiodermatitis in a timely manner, whose objective is to avoid interruption of radiotherapy treatment, which can reduce the chances of curing cancer. It can be concluded that there is an association between skin temperature and the appearance of radiodermatitis. A radioterapia é uma das modalidades terapêuticas para o tratamento do câncer e a radiodermite é um de seus efeitos colaterais, com alta prevalência que impacta negativamente na qualidade de vida do paciente, podendo levar a limitação da dose terapêutica de radiação, atraso na conclusão ou até mesmo a suspensão do tratamento. Contudo, seu diagnóstico é ainda realizado por meio de escalas qualitativas. Estudos recentes têm demonstrado evidências de que a termografia poderia ser útil neste contexto, pois é uma tecnologia que vem sendo continuamente aprimorada. Embora a fisiopatologia da radiodermite seja conhecida, ainda são escassos os estudos que mostrem a resposta térmica ao tratamento radioterápico e façam o mapeamento da radiodermite (com sua respectiva graduação). Assim, o presente estudo teve objetivo de analisar a associação entre a temperatura da pele irradiada, a dose acumulada de radiação e o diagnóstico da radiodermite, por meio da termografia. Foi realizada uma pesquisa descritiva com 76 participantes com câncer (pele, cabeça ou pescoço), com registro termográfico imediatamente antes e após irradiação (tanto no lado comprometido como no contralateral). Para o diagnóstico da radiodermite foi utilizada a escala RTOG (Radiation Therapy Oncology Group), e as informações complementares registradas na anamnese foram: sexo, idade, comorbidades, tipo e equipamento utilizado no tratamento, dose (diária e total), área irradiada. Como principais resultados, em nossa amostra 70% dos participantes apresentaram algum grau de radiodermite e foram observadas diferenças significativas na temperatura da pele comparando os participantes sem radiodermite (32,88 oC) e com radiodermite (diferença térmica na temperatura média superior a 1,0oC, tanto para o Grau I como para o Grau II de radiodermite). Em relação ao diagnóstico, o momento ideal para se realizar a avaliação termográfica seria após receber a nova dose diária, onde também verificamos uma correlação moderada (0,474) entre a temperatura do lado comprometido depois da irradiação e a dose acumulada pré-irradiação. Nossos resultados demonstram que a radiodermite promove uma alteração na temperatura da pele, cuja análise termográfica é capaz de quantificar. Por fim, pode-se concluir que há associação entre a temperatura da pele, a dose de irradiação acumulada e o aparecimento da radiodermite. Com base nos resultados da presente pesquisa, fica a sugestão de estudos com amostras maiores, e assim, a exploração de novas metodologias com critério quantitativo para o diagnóstico da radiodermite em tempo hábil, cujo objetivo seja evitar a interrupção do tratamento radioterápico, o que pode reduzir as chances de cura do câncer.
