Resumo: The disorderly urbanization experienced by Brazilian cities can be identified as the generator of social, economic and environmental problems, such as the segregation of the needy population, increased costs with infrastructure and the degradation of the environment. The lack of planning generates the spread of the urban perimeter of the city and consecutively causes the emergence of empty areas, which are often maintained for speculative purposes and fail to fulfill the social function of urban land. The unnecessary expansion of the city results in increased costs with urban infrastructure, and subjects the citizen to longer journeys in commuting from his home to the workplace. Thus, this work aimed to identify the existing urban voids in the city of Pato Branco/PR and their relationship with urbanization costs. First, a bibliographic research was carried out on urban voids and on current legislation to later develop thematic maps together with the analysis of infrastructure costs. As a conclusion of the study, the presence of urban voids increases the costs of urbanization, since the spread of the city requires greater investments in the implementation of infrastructure to serve the population. In this way, there is a need to abandon the old thinking of urban planning as an instrument of city growth, but as a strategy capable of managing urban voids, making the city more economical, resilient and sustainable.
