Resumo: The pet population is expanding, and the different sectors of the pet market are moving, which shows us that pet owners are concerned about ensuring the welfare of their pets. Among the factors that determine the good care of pets is food, a determining factor in their quality of life. Numerous brands of dog and cat food are available on the market, but it is important to assess whether they actually offer all the appropriate nutrients. The objective of this study was to verify whether the guarantee levels of pet food for domestic cats in the growth phase meet the recommendations and nutritional requirements of The European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF). Ten premium segment dry pet foods were evaluated, and the data collected were taken from the pet food labels. Subsequently, the data obtained were compared with the nutritional requirements of growing cats of FEDIAF, by means of a descriptive statistical analysis revealing that the feeds are shown to be in accordance with the recommendation. All the nutrients evaluated in the commercial diets are in accordance with the requirements, with only a few values varying more or less. Some of the most important nutrients such as protein and fat showed an average of 35.73% and 12.74% respectively, above the recommended (28% and 9% respectively). From the data analyzed in this study, it can be concluded that the premium segment feed proved to be in accordance with the nutritional levels recommended by FEDIAF. The provision of a balanced and complete food in nutritional terms is essential to promote health and welfare for pets.
