Resumo: Violence is one of the main themes of the short stories anthology Olhos D’Água by the Afro-Brazilian writer Conceição Evaristo. The objective of this dissertation is to identify the many forms of violence against female characters in six short stories of the book: "Ana Davenga", "Duzu-Querença", "Maria", "Quantos filhos Natalina teve?", " Beijo na face " and "Luamanda”, within a proposal of study based on the Afro-Brazilian literature concept. This work analyzes the female characters from the selected short stories that are victims of violence, which functions as mechanisms of domination and as survival strategies in Brazilian society, revealing the permanence of some patriarchal remnant in contemporary society. To accomplish this work the theoretical basis comprises the concept of Afro-Brazilian literature proposed by Eduardo de Assis Duarte (2011); the representation conceptions and identity by Kathryn Woodward (2007); Gilberto Freyre’s tenets (2006) on the formation of Brazilian society under the strong influence of the patriarchal order and Pierre Bourdieu’s essay (2017) about the female condition and symbolic violence. This research study also relies on the concept of urban violence by Ruben George Oliven (1986); the space definitions proposed by Roberto Damatta (1985) on the social place that women occupy in Brazilian society; Roberto Reis’s perception (1987) of the socioeconomic hierarchy in patriarchal logics in which women are totally devalued; and Mary Del Priore's work (2015) about sexuality and eroticism in Brazilian history.
