Resumo: The objective of this study was to identify the skills of the Management Strategic Design (MSD) systematized as a focus for improvement of the competitiveness of companies in the furniture industry at the Alto Vale do Rio Negro region, Santa Catarina. In order to meet this demand was held to search from a sample of 21 companies associated with the local union representative to the segment. We analyzed the activity of the management of design these manufacturers under the imprint of their strategic conduct and measuring the skills of design related to this section. The methodology for the analysis of results is descriptive, in order to assess the impact level and relevance of each area of competence in the activity at the expense of industrial design activity. In addition, conglomerate desirable activities or potential installed to exploring competitive advantages for this group of providers. The model converges to the description of knowledge in the context of product development, conducive to growth of variable economic, managerial and research; and seek their systematization and analogy through a strategic management audit design. The results suggest a partial incorporation of design as strategic element, limited specially by the informality of planning processes and restricted the conduct of development products accepted by the furniture makers of this pole. Despite this guidance dependent and borderline, suggest potential changes in catalysis, timely the development of professional skills and organizational folding design and its strengthening as input to competitiveness.
