Resumo: The systems available for the management of scientific journals and events offer support to the editorial flow that is centered in the process of submitting manuscripts for evaluation, through the feeding of the collection phase of the system, whose representation of the digital object is performed by the author using structure of metadata. In this scenario, the information representation process, for which there are specific treatment techniques from the area of Information Science, is no longer the prerogative of specialized subjects and was attributed to the researcher, who usually performs it as a simple field for submitting your manuscript to a system. The present study aims to discuss the role of the author in the information representation process in digital environments of scientific publication focusing on the interoperability of different information systems. Therefore, a bibliographic survey was conducted to support the discussion, as well as the analysis of data collected from digital environments in open access, using the Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting. The present discussion reinforces the need for standardization of metadata in terms of attributes and representations, aiming at record quality and efficiency in interoperability processes between systems so that digital environments can provide information in an agile and precise way. In this sense, it is understood that the standardization of the records must be carried out in the original source of publication, and that, after collection, the digital repositories maintain, in the registry, provenance metadata so that the quality of the record in its database is not questioned.
