Resumo: This research comes from a continuing education action that took place through four self-confrontation sessions held with higher education professors at UTFPR (Federal Technological University of Paraná) Câmpus Pato Branco. This proposal was implemented based on the theoretical and methodological assumptions of the Clinic of Activity -developed in France by Clot (2010) and Faïta (1996) -and applied by the Research Group called “Language, Activity and Human Development” (LAD'Human). The Clinic of the activity is, according to Clot (2017, p.18) “for almost twenty years, a methodology of action to change work”. Althaus (2019, p.30) states that the Clinic while taking care of work is also taking care of the health of the professional. One of the methods by which the Clinic operates is that of self-confrontation, in which professionals assist themselves in activity. These aforementioned sessions were held with a pair of volunteer faculty members from the Mathematics Department of the Campus. From the corpus produced and transcribed according to the norms of Project NURC / SP (PRETI, 1993), the objective was to find the digressions and their categories so that it was possible to understand what is the function of this phenomenon within the conversation. Digressions are defined as a portion of conversation that may or may not be linked to the main statement, but cannot be classified as inconsistent (DASCAL, 2006). Dascal; Katriel (1979 p. 76 -92) suggestthree categories for the classification of digressions: 1) interaction-based digressions; 2) utterance-based digressions; 3) insertion sequences digressions. After categorizing, the digressions were analyzed from the perspective of the regulatory function, according to Lima (2010). According to the author, regulatory activity is a phase that transits between external activity, in this case speech, to inner activity, which is thought. Thus, this research sought to analyze not only the linguistic phenomenon of the digression, but also its function as a regulating phenomenon of thought within theutterance and clinical development of the subject who participates in an initiative of the Activity Clinic. From this research, it was possible to verify that the digressionbased on the utterance have the function of regulating the speaker's thinking and, besides, they also act as strategies used within the utterance to overcome the obstacles encountered during the conversation, ie , the digressions seek to overcome what Clot (2010) called "The hard to say."
