Resumo: This study took place in order to know how the mediation of knowledge occurred in the Middle Ages, a period in history when religious tensions were present, carrying out a comparison between the books: "A Social Knowledge History: from Gutenberg to Diderot Peter Burke and the Rosa Name, a novel by Umberto Eco. It demonstrated the power of the state and the church in respect to storage and dissemination of knowledge and exposes the actions covered to tackle obstacles taxes in order to dismantle the cartel imposed by the holders of the time. The theoretical basis it was made through the relevant literature and the methodology used was descriptive research. Concluing that the mediation of knowledge occurs in a restricted way the Church and the State and both had not interest in spreading or mediate knowledge.
