Resumo: This paper analyzes the effect period of botulinum toxin in a patient with bruxism through an interocclusal device instrumented by sensors based on Bragg gratings in optical fibers. The case study of the volunteer patient involves two analyzes: maximum bite force and hyperactivity during sleep. In bite force analysis the patient wearing the occlusal device is oriented to bite in controlled trials while being monitored through the optical fiber sensors. In case of hyperactivity the patient sleeps with the occlusal device and the movements are monitored during this period. These two analyzes were performed before and after botulinum toxin application. Sensor recording, instrumented device fabrication process, system characterization and in vivo analysis are reported in this paper. The maximum bite results before application were 33.00 ±N 3.60 N. After botulinum toxin application the patient was monitored and maximum 18.80 ± 2.40 N bite forces were obtained, corresponding to approximately 57% of previous force. The patient was evaluated over time and approximately 4 months after application, the mean maximum force value was 30.70 ± 2.60 N, related to 93 % of the initial force. The results obtained in the hyperactivity analysis performed during sleep also indicate a reduction in movement amplitude after application. Before application, the average amplitude obtained was 32.90 ± 8.60 N and after the botulinum toxin application procedure, the average bite force was 24.80 ± 6.40 N, and return to approximately 75 % in 2 months.
