To this end, Mutarelli’s comics were situated as graphic novels, authored productions aimed at the adult public. After characterization, we sought the origins of adult comic in counterculture and underground. To reach the result, the main theories about the grotesque were investigated: the grotesque as opposed to the sublime of Victor Hugo, the strange grotesque of Wolfgang Kayser, and the grotesque realism of Mikhail Bakhtin. In addition, some examples of this aesthetic category have been described in literature, visual arts and comics. In order to outline a theoretical basis for the language of comics, language, the concept of cognitive technology and the spatiotopic system proposed by Thierry Groensteen were discussed. From these elements, Kayser’s grotesque stranger, Bakhtin’s grotesque body, and the semiotic manifestations proper to the comics that operate or contribute to the grotesque production in this media, we analyzed Mutarelli’s comics from the standpoint of grotesque aesthetics. Mutarelli’s comics were found to encompass multiple nuances of the grotesque, tanging Kayser’s romantic and strange worldview and the material aspect attached to the body. The latter, however, departs from the mental structures based on popular culture and the cosmic body described by Bakhtin. There was also a dialogue between the motives of the grotesque and the comic system, in some works of the author. O objetivo desta dissertação é discutir o tema do grotesco nas histórias em quadrinhos do autor Lourenço Mutarelli. Para tanto, situou-se os quadrinhos de Mutarelli como graphic novels, produções autorais voltadas para o público adulto. Após a caracterização, buscou-se as origens da história em quadrinhos adulta na contracultura e no underground. Para chegar ao resultado, investigou-se as principais teorias acerca do grotesco: o grotesco como oposição ao sublime de Victor Hugo, o grotesco estranho de Wolfgang Kayser e o realismo grotesco de Mikhail Bakhtin. Além disso, descreveu-se alguns exemplos dessa categoria estética na literatura, nas artes visuais e nas histórias em quadrinhos. No intuito de esboçar uma base teórica para a linguagem dos quadrinhos, discutiu-se os conceitos de linguagem e de tecnologia cognitiva, assim como o sistema espaçotópico proposto por Thierry Groensteen. A partir destes elementos: o grotesco estranho de Kayser, o corpo grotesco de Bakhtin e as manifestações semióticas próprias das histórias em quadrinhos que operam ou contribuem para a produção do grotesco nessa mídia, analisou-se as histórias em quadrinhos de Mutarelli do ponto de vista da estética grotesca. Constatou-se que os quadrinhos de Mutarelli abrangem múltiplas nuanças do grotesco, tangenciando a visão de mundo romântica e estranha de Kayser e o aspecto material ligado ao corpo. Este último, porém, afasta-se das estruturas mentais baseadas na cultura popular e do corpo cósmico descrito por Bakhtin.
