Resumo: The present study aims to discuss different possibilities of signification enabled by the silence in some of the poems by Hilda Hilst. To that end, we have chosen parts of Roteiro do Silêncio (1959) and Cantares do Sem Nome e de Partidas (1995) that seem to express more significantly the silence as part of language. Modernity has exposed mankind to a relentless feeling of misplacement. The language of silence has been implemented as a way of coping with the discontent of such an era, nevertheless, it has opened new possibilities to signify the self and the surrounding world. Therefore, the analysis of such prospect will be the core in which this paper is based on. Nonetheless, the signification established by the coexistence of the poetic persona and the other as one, through the movements of the signs conditioned by the language of silence will also support the reading and the analysis presented. Thereby, this thesis will be based on the conceptions developed, mainly, by Freud on the discontents of the mankind; by Compagnon to highlight some significant aspects of the Modernity; and, finally, Merleau-Ponty and Blanchot to discuss the silence as a fundamental component of language.
