This work aims to research the semantics of terminar ‘to finish’ in the periphrasis terminar de + infinitive,literally ‘finish of + infinitive’. Following Rothstein’s (2004) work on incremental predicates, we argue that this aspectual verb selects for a predicate which denotes an incremental eventuality as its argument, since it expresses the culmination of this eventuality. We also show that the selection of incremental eventualities related to terminar is a crosslinguistic fact. |
