In order to strengthen research with plants of popular use, the Ministry of Health published the list of RENISUS. In this list we find the tansagem (Plantago major), which is used in folk medicine as diuretic, antidiarrheal, expectorant, hemostatic and healing, and is used against infections of the upper respiratory tract (pharyngitis, tonsillitis, stomatitis), chronic bronchitis and as auxiliary In the treatment of peptic ulcers, among others. Studies on the species indicated the presence of phenolic compounds, flavonoids, iridoids, among others. In the present work the drying of P. major leaves was carried out at temperatures of 40, 60 and 80 ºC. The drying process was monitored until the mass of the material reached a constant value. The drying time was inversely proportional to the temperature, which was already expected. It was possible to remove about 92% of the moisture at all temperatures in short drying times. The contents of phenolic compounds were quantified and the highest value was EtOH/H2O 30% extract from drying at 40°C with 0.7459 mg EAG 100 g-1 sample. The conditions with the highest total flavonoid content were extractions with MeOH/H2O 5% solvents with dry tannage at 40 and 60oC and EtOH/H2O 5% with drying at 80oC. For the free radical sequestration method DPPH at a concentration of 10000 μg mL-1 the extracts presented rapid kinetics and percent inhibition of the radical greater than 92% in the time of 30 minutes. At the concentration of 1000 μg mL-1 in the time of 30 minutes, the extracts that presented the highest percentage of inhibition of the DPPH radical were EtOH/H2O 30% and MeOH/H2O 5%, with rapid kinetics. For the extracts activity against ABTS, at the concentration of 10000 μg mL-1 the four extracts of the drying at 40oC presented higher percentages of inhibition of the radical. At the time of 30 minutes of reaction, the percentages of antioxidant activity ranged from 57.06% to 63.67%. Thus, by analyzing all the results obtained, it is possible to propose that the drying of the tansagem be carried out at a temperature of 40°C, and the extract prepared with MeOH/H2O5% or EtOH/H2O30%, and considering the lower toxicity of the Ethanol, it is used as the best solvent to extract its bioactive compounds O estudo de plantas que são utilizadas na medicina popular é de grande importância para aprimorar sua eficácia e segurança.
