The present study aims to test the hypothesis that the addition of adequate proportions of polystyrene from disposable cups can improve the physical characteristics of the CAP (petroleum asphalt cement), comparing different polystyrene addition percentages (1%, 3% and 5%) with non-modified CAP, for penetration, softening point and flash point tests. The polymer-modified asphalt binder is used to improve pavement performance for major defects, fatigue cracking and permanent deformation and since polystyrene is not commonly used as a modifier, this work seeks to test it as an alternative, since in the city of Campo Mourão - PR there are no interest in recycling of disposable cups. The disposable cups were ground and then incorporated into the CAP. For the modification with 5% of polystyrene, it was observed that the binder resists higher temperatures without losing its main characteristics, but it leads to pavement consistency loss. Thus, it was concluded that polystyrene as an asphalt binder modifier should not be used for high vehicular traffic roads. |
