Resumo: The technological advancement has reached the construction industry and it is requiring the development of new construction techniques and use of materials that have a compelling benefit cost ratio and the use of polymer composites has presented convenient to promote a significant increase in load capacity of structural components. The objective of this work was to verify the efficiency of composite fiberglass to the strengthening and recovery of timber structures by the results obtained in mechanical tests. To do that, it was realized tests to characterize the Pinus Taeda timber and tests of simple bending and tension parallel to the fibers in specimen goods and reinforced to verify the increase in the tensile strength. In bending tests, it was verified a benefit of 34% for samples of similar densities, comparing samples with defects, there was an increase of 15,16% between a good and twin specimen containing node and reinforced. It was found a significant increase in maximum deflection generated by the reinforcement, what provides an enhanced structural safety to the user. In the tensile strength tests the reinforced samples broke for the tensile strength on the wood, thus it was not possible to verify the recovery caused by the composite. The materials used to generate the composite presented excellent adhesion to the substrate. It was concluded that the use of PRFs is a practical and viable alternative to the strengthening of pinewood and to reuse pieces containing defects.
