This paper presents a comparative design of a beam as prescribed by NBR 6118: 2003 and by NBR 6118: 2014. In this way, it aims to determine the differences in structural calculation, as it is sometimes carried out according to either NBR 6118: 2003 or NBR 6118: 2014. Many examples will be presented which demonstrate variations in the key parameters of structural calculation. The paper thus aims to reveal the underlying theoretical aspects, with reference to the key literature. In each example of structural analysis methods which follow the relevant rules and standards, one can see a parallel between three aspects: Elastic Analysis, Elastic Analysis with Redistribution and Plastic Analysis. This paper also aims to determine the amount of steel required in the production of steel-armoured beams in varying situations, and questions the most viable alternative from an economic perspective. |
