In the last years, the advance of structural analysis and design together with a constant development in the production of materials with better mechanic properties has allowed the construction of higher spans structures and more economical cross sections. The larger spans and the more economical cross-sections can cause problems related to excessive vibration in the structures. Excessive vibration can be controlled using the passive control device called Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) whose installation is done where the highest modal amplitude, and it may be necessary to have one or more TMD in the structure. These devices are constituted of a massspring assembly arranged in parallel with a damper, so that they are fixed in the main structure and thus constitute a system. For the design of these devices it is necessary to find the optimal values for the parameters: relation between system masses (μ), system frequency relation (β) and dimensionless damping of the absorber (ξa). The design can be done using the method presented by Moutinho (1998) with the use of abacuses. The objective of this work is to develop and implement a Genetic Algorithm (AG) for the design of a TMD for application in precast concrete floor slab. The GA was tested on three analytical models of slabs subject to the walking people loading. The precast concrete slabs were purposely designed such that were in resonance with the 3rd harmonic of walking people loading. For all the slabs studied, it was considered a normal walking load, with frequency of the fundamental harmonic of 2 Hz, thus obtaining a simulation of discomfort for the users of the slab. After the simulations with the GA it was concluded that the results obtained for the parameters μ, β and ξa were consistent with the results obtained by Moutinho (1998). Finally, it was observed that, for the three floor slabs studied, the vibration comfort criterion was reached after the TMD installation. |
