Resumo: The wooden constructions, as they are made of material from renewable sources, favor the environment contributing to the sustainability and reducing the impacts generated by the civil construction sector. Due to the low elastic constant values of the wood, it presents deformations that generally limit the design of beams, but the effects generated by the shear portion can be disconsidered, which compromises the design of short beams. The present work has the objective of evaluate the influence of the shear stresses on the deformations of timber beams of Garapeira (Apuleia leiocarpa) species. Four-point flexion tests were carried out in element of structural dimensions and tests of elastic characterization in normalized test bodies, according to ABNT NBR 7190 (1997). The experimental, analytical and numerical results shows that for short beams the shear effects should be considered in the design, and therefore the text proposed by the revision project of ABNT NBR 7190 (2011) is not adequate, when compared to Its current version.
