Resumo: This study aimed to verify the possibility of using red ceramic as filters for water treatment in order to compare with the anthracite coal and sand, resource usually not renewable. The tests were performed in an experimental simulation module phases of a water treatment (coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation and filtration). The filter 1 operated with direct downward flow filtration in an acrylic box, width and length of 12 cm and 30 cm, while the filter 2 operated in a PVC pipe section of 60 cm in length with an internal diameter of 19 mm. The system, which operated on the filter, was fed with a constant flow rate at its upper end to prevent variations in the water level, performed by the internal simulator system. After four trials carried out on the filter 1 and five trials on filter 2, it was verified that 4 of 9 tests performed fell into place partially in No 2.914/2011 Decree. It was observed that the red ceramic blocks breaks could have potential for use as filters for water treatment. In both filters studied the results showed that the crushed ceramic beds with anthracite coal aid amounted to 99.27% overall efficiency, with superior performance in removing turbidity regarding the use of sand or sand with anthracite. It is recommended for the experiments to be tested in realistic scales with greater accuracy.
