Resumo: Polluted environments have become a constant concern because of the effects on health. Thus, public sanitation has become a service in a systematic way throughout Brazil. The industries have changed the materials used in the manufacture of products, changing the habits of the population and hampering environmentally proper segregation and disposal of solid waste. Thus, the legislation innovated is seeking alternatives that would allow the interaction between the environment, social development and the reduction of public spending through financial incentives after adaptation to the law. This environmental and social interaction is established by means of integrated systems such as the Municipal Plan for Solid Waste Integrated Management, which allows the reduction of waste generation and provides income generation avoiding waste. The objective of this study is to evaluate the management of municipal solid waste in the micro-region of São Sebastião do Paraíso, state of Minas Gerais, compared to establishing the National Policy on Solid Waste. Law No. 12,305 / 10 deals with various tools associated with waste management, such as waste sorting and creation of cooperatives / formalized collectors associations. The results achieved, and explained by means of thematic maps, show that there is still difficulty for municipalities suited to the legislation, taking into account their different realities. The major problems encountered are the lack of technical capacity and financial resources. Furthermore, management are difficulties in carrying out the sustainable action.
