The proposal came from the verification of the lack of a space that encourages a reading and a culture in the city, in order to contribute to a relationship between the community and the municipality. Therefore, the present research addresses the concept of library, its importance, characteristics and principles, in order to provide the basis for the development of the work. We also analyze some related studies, which are revealed for the later project. Finally, after the collection of data and information about a city of Araucária, it is possible to determine the land for installation of the new library, as well as guidelines, must be fulfilled for the development of the project. O presente estudo busca servir de referencial teórico para posteriormente desenvolver o projeto arquitetônico de uma nova sede para a biblioteca municipal da cidade de Araucária. A proposta surgiu a partir da verificação da carência de um espaço que incentive a leitura e a cultura na cidade, de forma a contribuir para a relação da comunidade com o município. Para tanto, na presente pesquisa é abordado o conceito de biblioteca, sua importância, características e princípios, a fim de proporcionar as bases necessárias para o desenvolvimento do trabalho. Também são analisados alguns estudos correlatos, os quais revelam diferentes propostas e estabelecem repertório adequado para o posterior projeto.
