Resumo: This research aims to show the importance of dance for human life and present how it can be used as a social instrument for appropriating public spaces. It analysis the basic concepts for elaborating an architectural project of an African-Brazilian Dance Academy in the city of Curitiba-PR, with the aim of improving the visibility, appreciation and cultural preservation of this ethnic group artistic values. In the course of this work, Curitiba’s dance scene was studied, such as the importance of a cultural equipment dedicated for the African-Brazilian culture, recognizing the contribution of this ethnic group for the development of Brazilian society. Following, a research was applied on the current panorama of the municipality, identifying the Historic Center as a region that lacks the most of cultural equipments in the modality, characterizing a possible stimulant for a social change.
