Resumo: |
This work presents the research driven by the development of a new typeface, Kury, for use in traffic signage. Propelled by the use of foreign typefaces in Brazilian road signage system, this work started with literature research about the state of the art and about design methodologies, before focusing on the account of the practical experience of designing a functional typeface for specific use. In order to further theoretical depth, first, general topics about typography are delved into, presenting its main elements, besides shedding some light on technical terms related to this field of study. A quick research on traffic signage follows, addressing its origins and, targeting the Brazilian scenario, what is the legislation for the use of typefaces in Brazilian road signage systems. Complementing this, there is the case study of similar typefaces specifically designed for this purpose around the world, because of the absence of such example in Brazil. As an aid for the new typeface development, a methodology for typeface design is analyzed. It provides the workflow from initial sketches and vectorization, up to spacing settings. An user validation test took place in order to check results regarding legibility, readability and familiarity. After some adjustments suggested by the validation test, the typeface was named Kury, based on the name of the city of Curitiba, Brazil, which served as inspiration for the project. A type specimen was designed for presenting and promoting the font. This paper describes both research and development, finally showcasing the resulting achievement. |
