Resumo: Sedentary behavior is understood as activities with an expenditure equal to or less than 1.5 metabolic equivalents (METs) as sitting, lying or reclining position. This behavior may potentiate risk factors for various diseases. It has been observed that university students are constantly performing behaviors of low caloric expenditure in their daily activities, and studies with this population are scare in Brazil. Objective: The aim of the study was to propose a questionnaire to evaluate sedentary behavior in university students. Methods: The study was characterized by cross-sectional, observational design of a Federal University. Participated 14 university students. The questionnaire to assess sedentary behavior was described after five stages of preparation. It was questioned the time and days of the week that the university passes in sedentary behaviors in the domains of occupation, leisure and commuting. Results: The medians of time in hours exposed to sedentary behavior were higher for females compared to males, in the areas of occupancy 28 hours, leisure 33 hours and displacement six hours. Conclusion: Most validated questionnaires that assess sedentary behavior only use screen time (television, videogame and computer) as an evaluation criterion, making it difficult to investigate other behaviors. Future studies are needed to validity self-reported measures and standardize the questionnaires that assess the time exposed to sedentary behavior.
